Psst: this post is a sequel to to our post for new dog parents, “Your first day with your new dog.” Take a look at that one before you dive in here!
Bringing home a new dog it’s an incredibly exciting time, but it can be stressful not only for your new addition, but also for your resident dog, at home. You will want to make sure that you (and every other person that you share your home with) have formulated a plan before you arrive at your front door with your new dog. A few months ago, BADRAP released a cartoon video that packs more useful information into three minutes than I could ever attempt to convey in a few hundred word blog post. So, without further ado, I give you BADRAP’s short video….
Pretty awesome, huh? Here are my favorite take aways:
- You’ll want some (relatively) inexpensive supplies prepared and in place before you bring your new pup home: a wire dog crate, a baby gate, and supplies for a tie down (tip: a 4 or 6 foot leash looped around the back leg of a couch and clipped to the dog’s collar works well as a makeshift tie down.)
- Just like I wrote about in our initial post, structure, boundaries and routine are the key to success. This means that the new dog will need to learn the new rules and routine, of course, but it also means that you will need to try to maintain your original dog’s already existing routine as much as possible.
- Dog/dog integrations take time. (For some of our fosters, this has been a few days. For others, a couple of weeks. For one in particular, about two months before she and Beau were fully integrated.)
Thank you, BADRAP, for this awesome resource!
